"What exactly is mindfulness?"
I am often asked this question.
In a word, there are various types of mindfulness,
including those based on zazen,
those based on a series of yoga movements,
and those being studied with the brain at universities around the world.
I was first introduced to mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts in the States,
and since then I have been deeply drawn to mindfulness based on scientific evidence.
As I continue to learn more, I realize that mindfulness is an indispensable skill for people today,
who are busy going about their daily lives amidst a flood of information.
I myself have continued to feel the importance of dealing with mental health in my days of stress,
lack of sleep, and overwork while working as a broadcaster at national television.
Just as we need to maintain our bodies,
taking care of our mental health on a daily basis will lead to a healthy and prosperous life.
I launched kikimindfulness to share with as many people as possible the usable skills that have actually been adopted in the State, where mindfulness has been practiced since the 70s.
Mindfulness meditation means to be aware of the present moment.
We spend most of our day on autopilot.
We unconsciously look at our phones, eat our meals while our awareness is elsewhere,
or listen to others' conversations.
If we stay in such a state for too long, we miss out on the wonderful experiences that are actually happening in the moment, and we lose the ability to read the essence, value, and meaning of things.
Mindfulness has developed in the medical field and spread to the general public.
Its relevance to brain science has been studied in educational institutions,
and it continues to attract great interest in the business and athletic worlds.
